My sweet Aaron was a world traveler before he even left the womb! Two weeks after I found out that I was pregnant, my niece and I flew out to Texas. That was the only time that I have ever even considered using the little baggie that the airline was so kind to put in the seat in front of me!
Then, when I was about 5 months along, I got the bright idea to fly to Athens, Greece for a mission trip to the Olympics! Actually, I had the idea long before that, but that was when I actually did the traveling!
The actual traveling part of the trip to Greece is kind of a blur in my memory. I do remember being miserably tired and that they tried to serve me fish! Ugh! The travel agent that my team used booked us on a tour of Europe on the way there and back (or at least that is what it felt like!) For some weird reason we had layovers in both Paris, France and Bucharest, Romania! I have traveled from NC to Indonesia in less time than it took us to get from NC to Athens. Seriously, I have!
Traveling while pregnant...can it be done? Yes! Do I recommend it? Not really! But, if you do feel the need to fly the friendly skies while you are preggers, here are some things I recommend:
1. Try to get the most direct flights. Even if it cost a little more. You will be glad you did!
2. Get up and walk around the plane as much as possible! Your legs, back, etc. will thank you.
3. Sleep as much as possible! I slept on the planes, in the Bucharest airport, the Athens subway, the Athens airport, a mini-bus touring Bucharest...do you see a trend forming here?
4. Carry high protein snacks with you. I recommend almonds and turkey jerky. Airplane food is disgusting when you are not pregnant. It is even worse when you are.
5. Let the flight attendents cater to you. It is okay to be a little more demanding when you are pregnant, but don't be witchy!
6. Request an aisle seat when booking your ticket-this goes along with #2. Plus, you know you are going to have to go to the bathroom!
